What the price actually covers

A turnkey installation is five jobs in one, and a quote that hides any of them will find you later. The gates themselves, whether hardwood, powder-coated aluminium or galvanised steel. The operators, underground motors or ram arms for swing leaves, a rack-driven unit for a sliding gate. The safety layer, meaning photocells, force limitation and often safety edges. The electrical supply, armoured cable from a spare way in the consumer unit out to the pillars. And the groundwork, which is post foundations, duct runs and, on a tracked slider, a concrete bed that will not heave in a hard frost.

On a typical four metre Teesside driveway with power close by, that adds up to £3,200 to £5,500. Wide openings, long cable runs, heavy hardwood leaves or a cantilever slider push it towards £9,500. Nothing about that range is mysterious once the survey is done.

Materials, and what they do here

• Aluminium: light, will not rust, holds a powder-coated finish for years and puts less strain on motors. The sensible default on coastal plots at Redcar, Marske and Seaton Carew.
• Galvanised and powder-coated steel: the strongest option and the right one for wide spans and commercial yards. Galvanised before coating, or the salt air will find the cut edges.
• Hardwood: looks superb in front of a stone or period property, weighs the most, and moves with the seasons. Needs a proper motor specification and a maintenance habit.
• Composite and slatted infills: a good compromise on exposed plots, where a solid board gate behaves like a sail every time the wind comes up the valley.

The electrical supply is not an afterthought

Gate motors need a fused, protected supply out at the entrance, and on most properties that means digging a duct from the house. The three questions that decide the cost are whether the consumer unit has a spare way, how far the pillars are from it, and what the cable has to cross. Thirty metres of lawn is straightforward. Thirty metres of block paving laid two years ago is a conversation. A good quote states the route, the cable type and who reinstates the surface, and the electrical work is certified and notified as it should be.

Pillars, posts and foundations

The most common cause of a gate that never quite works is a post that moves. Underground motors sit in a drained box that has to be set dead level and connected to the hinge line precisely, and a sliding gate needs a foundation that carries both the gate weight and the leverage of a cantilever. Where brick or stone pillars already exist, the survey checks whether they are solid enough to take ram motors or need a steel post set behind them. It is unglamorous work and it is the difference between a gate that runs sweetly for a decade and one that needs a fitter out every spring.

Handover, testing and paperwork

A finished installation should come with force measurements taken with a proper gauge at the leading and hinge edges, photocells aligned and demonstrated, the manual release shown to whoever lives there, and a technical file with the declaration of conformity and the manuals. That paperwork matters if you ever sell the house, and it matters more if anything ever goes wrong. It is included in a properly priced job, not sold afterwards.

How long it takes

Two to three days on site is typical for new gates: day one for groundworks and cable, a curing gap for the foundations, then hanging, wiring, commissioning and testing. Bespoke gates add lead time at the fabricator, usually three to six weeks for a made-to-measure pair, less for standard sizes held in stock. The quote should give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic one.
